What is ETIAS?
The rules for travelling to most European countries have changed.
From the first half of 2025, some 1.4 billion people from more than 60 visa-exempt countries will need a travel authorisation to enter 30 European countries for a short stay.
In short, the ETIAS travel authorization is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals traveling to any of these 30 European countries.
These countries are:
Who needs an ETIAS travel authorization?
Nationals of any of the visa-exempt countries/territories listed below must apply for an ETIAS travel authorization starting in the first half of 2025.
At the level of tourist importance for the Province of Malaga, it is important to note that this includes travelers from:
· Brazil
· Japan
· Mexico
· United Kingdom
· United Arab Emirates
· USA
Is it linked to the traveler's passport?
It is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
If the traveler obtains a new passport, he or she will need to obtain a new ETIAS travel authorization.
With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can enter the territory of these European countries as many times as you wish for short-term stays (usually up to 90 days in a 180-day period).
However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, you will need to meet the entry conditions for each country.
Period of validity of the ETIAS
As noted, the ETIAS travel authorization is valid for three years or until the travel document you used in your application expires, whichever comes first.
The traveler must be in possession of a valid ETIAS travel authorization for the entire duration of the stay.
You may leave and return at any time, as long as you respect this time limit.
Specific cases
If you come from one of the visa-exempt countries/territories listed above and are a family member of an EU citizen or a national of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, the procedure for applying for an ETIAS travel authorization changes.
Upon arrival at the border
As the ETIAS travel authorization is linked to a travel document, tourists must carry the same document they used in their ETIAS application.
Otherwise, you will not be allowed to board your flight, bus or boat, or enter any of the European countries that require ETIAS.
